Since becoming an Independent celebrant I have met some wonderful people and found the work truly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to help and to be part of those personal ceremonies which form an important part of people’s lives. It may be in the form of a celebration as in Commitment Ceremonies, Renewal of vows or baby naming’s, or during sad times when families are planning the Funeral of a loved one .

The client’s wishes are my first concern in this very rewarding work, and the understanding and commitment I can give to those all important events is total. My aim is to listen, provide support during the planning stages, and to make each ceremony personal and meaningful to those involved.

Lesley Fraser, Edinburgh Celebrants & SICA Vice Chair

 Lesley Fraser – Edinburgh Celebrants

Mobile: 07836 703 863

I have a 25 year background in bereavement and relationship counselling. I have been broadcasting and public speaking for over 20 years. A trained nurse, I have long held the conviction that helping relatives to say goodbye to their loved family members helps them to carry on despite their loss. I would have liked to have had this support when my parents died and also when my sister died suddenly at the age of twenty-nine.

I will create a service which reflects the life of the person who has died, in a way that is respectful and supportive to their relatives. A true celebration of their life. There can be as much religious content as required, or none at all. I live in Edinburgh, but travel all over to meet families and deliver their service. As well as funerals, I am happy to create celebrations for Baby Naming, Renewal of Vows and Wedding Celebrations.

Laura Gordon, Caledonian Celebrant & SICA Treasurer

My name is Laura Gordon and I made the decision to become an Independent Celebrant after working for many years as a Funeral Director with one of the UK’s largest companies. The experience I gained in this role was invaluable. I saw that there was a need for families and individuals to be offered more choice in arranging personal and tailor-made services to mark the major events and celebrations in their lives.

To that end, I have created Caledonian Celebrant which offers a unique approach to planning your very personal celebration or tribute.

I mainly conduct and officiate services in Central Scotland, covering areas such as Stirlingshire, Glasgow, North and South Lanarkshire, West Lothian, Edinburgh, Fife and Perthshire, although I am willing to travel further afield and cover all areas of Scotland.

Kevin Thompson, Ceremonies You Want

A long-time public speaker and educationalist, and now experienced celebrant, I bring these skills to helping families cope with the loss of a loved one or to celebrate that special event, be it a fully-legal wedding, child-naming, affirmation of vows or indeed anything else. I believe the wishes of the family to be paramount and will design a customised service to suit your wishes. I find helping people celebrate the key milestones in life such as marriage, child-naming and of course funerals, to be most rewarding and feedback shows families like what we design together, and equally important, how it is delivered.

Some recent feedback from funerals:

  • “You brought mum back to life there, thanks a million “
  • “That was him to a ‘tee’..excellent job”
  • “You have a great turn of phrase and have certainly summed up mum. We really appreciate that.”
  • “Your service was so good people thought you knew him. It was very uplifting”
  • “You have my most sincere thanks for making his service so tremendous and so very personal.  A great many people thought it was just right for him as I did, too.  Everything seemed to go very well on the day. Thank you again, Kevin, my family and friends took a lot of comfort from your handling of the service.
  • “Just a short note to thank you for the excellent send off you gave our dad yesterday. Everyone said that it was good to hear about him in such a friendly way. We really appreciated it”
  • “The service was excellent. People kept asking how long you had known him and would not believe you had never met.  Well done.”

Ewan Skinner

Home Address – Strupag, 50 Forest Place, Dunfermline KY12 0EP

I work, East, South East and Central Scotland and am willing to travel widely.

I will conduct funerals, Baby naming ceremonies and memorials.

“My father was a minster of religion and I spent 30 years serving as a police officer before working with a funeral company in both Edinburgh and Fife.

I am now an Independent Celebrant based in the East of Scotland.

The services I am able to conduct can contain whatever religious or non religious content. Although it is a sad time, the ceremony would be designed to honour, pay tribute to and give thanks for the life of your loved one.

It will be your special service of remembrance.”

Hugh O’Neill, In Memoriam Services

I am based in Scotland and have been conducting Funerals, Wedding Blessings and Baby Namings for several years now.

I retired from the Army in 1997 and trained as a Toastmaster and have been involved in the formal duties of a Toastmaster ever since.

It was put to me that the skills of a Toastmaster could be applied to Civil Celebrancy.  I took up the challenge and, after training with the UK College of Celebrancy, realised that this was something I really wanted to do.

Having lost both my parents and my brother in recent years I am able to empathise fully with the berieved families that I encounter.  I am able to provide them with a service which is tailored to their requirements and which also takes into account the beliefs and philosophies of the deceased.

I have also had the great joy of conducting both Wedding Blessings and Baby Namings, though not on the same day – yet!

I have been asked to officiate abroad and also to use my linguistic skills at home for foreign couple seeking a different wedding experience.

I am a Founding Member of the Scottish Independent Celebrants’ Association.

I look forward to serving you and your families in whatever capacity would be appropriate.

Kirsty Williams

About me

I became an celebrant in May 2016, deciding to follow this vocation after being widowed in 2015. Kindness and compassion to others has always been my priority when working with people.

Throughout my career I have worked in various roles supporting people, mostly in the voluntary sector. I started working in these roles after completing an Honours degree in Psychology.

Co-ordinating social inclusion projects for older people with sensory loss and supporting unpaid carers across Moray, I loved being able to use my creative flair to organise social events and activities. Listening to people’s life stories is fascinating and I enjoyed being able to find creative ways to encourage people to feel included in their community.

I take the same care and attention when writing celebrations of life. I enjoy personalising services that truly reflect a person and how they lived their life. I also create other ceremonies for all different occasions, including naming ceremonies and renewal of wedding vows, in fact I can create a ceremony for any occasion that marks a significant moment in your life.

In my spare time I love to watch my two lurchers running free on the beaches in the local area.

At home crocheting is a favourite hobby, particularly blankets. I like to be creative and my blankets normally evolve to reflect the person who will receive it.

I also like to get creative in the kitchen and love to bake, from cupcakes to homemade tablet.

I’d love to hear your story, so if you are planning a ceremony for any occasion, please get in touch.

Annette MacDonald

Hello, my name is Annette MacDonald and I am a fully qualified Funeral Director, working in Aberdeen with many years experience.

Through the years, I have listened to the families for whom I was privileged to be able to assist and I know that they appreciated being given a choice as to how the service for their loved one was conducted.  As a result of this, I took the steps to continue my professional development and train as a Civil Celebrant.

We all know that traditionally a Minister would preside over the funeral service, but more and more families wanted a less religious service, Humanist ceremonies may suit some, however they do not allow any spiritual content or the chance to sing a hymn.  I believe that it is not up to the officiant to decide what content can or cannot be included, you have the right to the service most befitting your beliefs.

For advice or guidance, my contact details are: annette.macdonald@dignityuk.co.uk or via Gordon & Watson Funeral Directors on 01224 580377.
